Dear Friends and Colleagues,

There's no denying it... the holidays are here.  Use this time wisely.  The next week or two should be used to wrap up whatever business you have to do externally.  The last week or two of 2006 should be used to take care of your business internally.  Do all of those things that have been lingering on your to-do list.

That way, when 2007 comes, you'll be ready to hit the ground running.  To help you do that, I'm happy to announce we'll be starting a six-week Profitability Boot Camp in January, as well as another edition of our SIMB Study Group.  More info on both below.

Liz and I would like to take this opportunity to tell you what an honor and pleasure it is to work with you, and we look forward to continuing and building on that work in 2007.  We hope you have a blessed, joyous and very happy holiday!

Warmest regards,

John

Resolved to make more money in 2007?

Start the New Year off right with...

Profitability Boot Camp - The Boot Camp That Pays For Itself

Is your stamping business efficiently profitable?  In other words, are you making as much money as you can with the lowest possible investment of time?

If not, I invite you to sign up for the Profitability Boot Camp!  The Boot Camp will take place over six weeks.  We'll meet via conference call every Tuesday night at 10:00 p.m. (eastern), beginning January 16th and ending February 20th (if you can't make all of the calls, don't worry, the recordings will be available to listen to).

Among the topics we'll cover:

  • Setting up an easy system to keep track of your finances

  • How to increase your sales AND increase your profit (they don't have to be mutually exclusive!)

  • Identifying and minimizing the true costs of your business

  • Identifying and maximizing the true profit centers of your business

  • How to figure out what to charge for classes and events

  • The Five Financial Traps stamping business owners fall into and how to avoid them

  • How to remain competitive without reducing your prices

  • ...and more!

In addition to the six weekly calls, Boot Camp members will also receive:

  • Access to the recordings of all six calls

  • Access to the password-protected Profitability Blog, which will contain additional information, resources and articles to help you increase the profitability and efficiency of your business

  • Access to special online calculators to help you determine your class fees and other service charges

  • Step-by-step instructions for setting up and maintaining your own financial management system

The Boot Camp begins on Tuesday, January 16th, but space is limited.  To encourage you to register as soon as possible, I am offering an early-bird registration of $49.50 through December 31st. Once the early-bird registration expires, registration will be $59.99.

Either way, this Boot Camp pays for itself!  I am quite confident that anyone who implements the strategies and systems we discuss will save much more money than they're paying to register!

Stamping Is My Business Study Group

If you're looking to make 2007 THE year for your stamping business.  If you're trying to find a way to increase your knowledge and accountability, without spending too much money, the SIMB Study Group may be the answer.

The Study Group will meet via conference call once per month, for one hour.

Each month, we will discuss one or two chapters of the book and go into them in much greater depth and detail.  I will also ask you to complete tasks at the end of each call.

The Study Group will begin Monday, January 8th, and will meet on the second Monday of each month, at 10:00 p.m. eastern for 12 months.  If you cannot make a call, don't worry...all calls will be recorded and you will have access to them.  You will never have to miss a call!

You will also have access to me.  If you ever have a question or problem that you would like coaching on, you will be able to get in touch with me via e-mail for a timely response.

The best part of the Study Group is the price - just $19.99 per month!

Last-minute tax tips for 2006

Remember, if you're running your stamping business as a business, you should be able to claim your business income and expenses on a Schedule C when you file your 2006 taxes.   Here are two things you can do right now to take advantage at tax time:

1. If you know you're going to show a profit, and you would like to bring that number down somewhat (in order to reduce your tax liability), buy the things you're going to need for your business in 2007 before the end of this year.  That way, they'll be 2006 expenses and decrease your bottom line.  Remember, this is only for legitimate purchases.

2. If you're not keeping track of the mileage you're driving for your business, backtrack before January 1st and get it all down on a log.  When you do your taxes, you can then deduct 44.5 cents per mile from your bottom line.  Doesn't sound like much?  Well, if you drove 3000 business-related miles in 2006, you could deduct $1,335!

Book of the Month

Mavericks at Work - Why the Most Original Minds in Business Win

by William C. Taylor & Polly LaBarre

Anyone who knows me knows why I would recommend this book.  One of the reasons I can be controversial at times is because I'm not a big fan of doing the same old thing over and over again.

In this age of innovation, business-as-usual is a bust.  At a time when customers are practically evolving day-to-day, companies that stick with the same old ideas are on a self-destructive course.

This book tells the stories of forward thinkers at some of America's biggest companies.  People who went out on a limb, assumed the risk and reaped the rewards for themselves and the companies they work for.

An inspirational read for all.

Stamping Business Q&A

Do I Need to Own a Stamp Set to Sell It?

Absolutely Not!

In fact, one of the best (and most underutilized) benefits of not having to carry an inventory is that you can make a much larger profit if you sell a stamp set you don't own!

For example, one of my SU clients recently purchased all six of the Simply Sent kits.  As a result, she will have to sell about 24 kits just to break even.  After all of the effort it will take her to sell 25 kits, she'll have a measly $10 profit to show for it.

However, because you don't have to carry an inventory, you could promote the kits through the online and print catalogs, email and phone calls, sell 25 kits (without owning one) AND walk away with a $250 profit!

Which would you prefer?

For more information like this, please see the item on the left about the Profitability Boot Camp.
